Summer Knitting Projects That We Love!

Summer knitting projects are often skipped over in our project queues. With this year's seasonal upheavals, we completely understand why; in a single morning, we can have 'Cornish Rain' that drives through us, followed by blistering sunshine and blue clouds. It can be tricky to find a project that not only fits our seasonal, coastal aesthetics when the sun is out, but keeps us warm when the wind decides to blow our hair into the ice cream cones! Keeping our knitting going through the warmth can be enjoyed with lightweight projects, which is why we have chosen the three that we love this year to share with you (one of them may be a bit of a surprise!).
The Newlyn Shawlette by Comfort Roads Knit

We have loved seeing so many of you cast on the Newlyn Shawlette by Nicky Farley at Comfort Roads Knit, since we launched it in the store in May! The Shawl is perfect to wear all day, no matter what the weather, when it's knitted up in CaMaRose's 'Lovfald' yarn. The yarn is 60% merino wool blended with 40% baby alpaca, which combines to make a lightweight, breathable project that keeps you warm when you need it, but cool was well. That's the great thing about knitting with natural fibres; they regulate our temperature through the incredible insulating powers that are naturally formed within them.
'The Tolsta Tee' by Rebecca Clow
'The Tolsta Tee' has become a firm favourite for knitters across the world, and we think it is due to the fact that Rebecca Clow created a truly universal design that can be adapted for any season, or weight of yarn! With clear directions and easy-to-read charts, it is an ideal pattern to get on your needles this summer, no matter how long you have been knitting! The striped version is a lovely option, and here at 'Stitches and Cream', Nic is keen to see it in a faded design using the Yarny Octopus Bundle 'Harbour Dusk'. These three colourways have been put together to represent the sun setting over the sea in summer. With calming sage greens, golden flecks and mid-tone blues, we can see these yarns being knit up to remind you of a memorable time spent by the waters.

Looking for a new Summer Tee Pattern to knit? I have recently released a selection of patterns chosen by real knitters, not just the algorithm of Ravelry or social media, but people who have made them again and again. If you are looking for some inspiration, then 'Your Summer Tee Knitting Guides: From Popular Faves to Hidden Gem' is live now on YouTube.
'Deep Winter Hat' by Wool and Pine
Despite the name, this hat is a lovely one for the summer here in Cornwall! After an early morning sea swim, you will often find Jenny wearing one of her handmade hats to keep her warm after her dips, even in August. We also find that they are useful on windy walks along the coastal paths, stuffed into a bag and ready to grab in time. Hats are also a great project when you are travelling; they are easy to pick up and take with you, and the patterns have enough interest to keep you engaged. 'Deep Winter' by Wool and Pine has a delicate cable with an easy crown, and as it is a small pattern, we think it is a fab beginner knit if you want to learn cables before you crack on with a larger sweater project.
Jenny has this on her Ravelry queue to knit up with Baa Ram Ewe's Woodnote DK in the Caterpillar Green, and acid green that will look fantastic in the summer and the early autumn. The BFL, Masham and Merino mix will make the cables 'pop', and the fibre mix is a light, soft, non-itchy yarn that is perfect for hat brims.

We would love to see which patterns you are knitting up this summer, and hear about which yarns you are enjoying. Between 4ply sock weight yarns, easy breezy linens, and a gentle cottons, there is a lot to choose from this summer season. Until next time, happy knitting.
